Ibondo Education Center

Education for a Better Future

The Ibondo Education Center is a school currently under development in a suburb of Sengerema, near Lake Victoria.

History

Sengerema is a rapidly growing town with many newcomers from all over Tanzania. As prices in the town have risen accordingly, the poorer populations are increasingly moving to the villages directly outside the town. One of these villages is Ibondo. The people there can hardly afford food and drink.

During his studies, Brother Eli, one of the S.C.I.M brothers, frequently passed through Ibondo. It quickly became clear to him that the local people, especially the children, needed the brothers’ help. With the support of some international brotherhoods and some kind-hearted residents, the brothers were able to acquire some land. With the help of some sponsors, they managed to build the St. Paul House in 2020. A first step for the Ibondo Education Center. The St. Paul House now serves as the brothers’ home. Additionally, small groups of children can already be taught there. Of course, this is not yet full-fledged school instruction, but a first step for the children who have not been able to attend school so far.

In 2024, most of the other buildings were finally completed. The school now includes seven classrooms and St. Paul’s House . For the regsistration as school a toilet building, an office and a kitchen are missing. With the registration of the school, it is planned to teach 20 children from Ibondo for free in the first year at the Ibondo Education Center. Over the years, the number is expected to increase further.

Water Supply

The area around Ibondo is very dry despite its proximity to Lake Victoria. The people have little access to water. Therefore, children have to walk kilometers daily to fetch water from unclean sources, carrying it home in buckets. As an association, we have decided, together with the brothers, to lay a water pipe for clean drinking water into the village. Since the villagers cannot afford this pipe water, we as an association cover the water bill for the 45 families in the village. This gives each family free access to 60 liters of fresh, clean water daily. At the same time, the children have more free time, allowing them to attend the brothers’ lessons.

At Christmas, we give gifts to about 135 children from families in Ibondo. We collect donations to buy clothing, medical soaps (fungal diseases are unfortunately very common, and families cannot afford to treat them), school supplies, and food locally. The celebration organized by the brothers each year brings a sparkle to the children’s eyes and has become a permanent part of our work.
